Planning for your Business: When a Hurricane Approaches

1. Listen for Weather Updates on local stations, internet weather channels like weather.com or National Hurricane Center and on NOAA Weather Radio. Don’t trust rumors and stay tuned to the latest information.

2. Check Your Disaster Supplies Kit at work. Obtain any needed items. Contact employees and instruct them to do the same at their homes. Get a Hurricane Emergency Kit list.

3. Instruct Employees to Refill Prescriptions and to maintain at least a two week supply during hurricane season.

4. Clear Property and/or tie down any items that could become flying missiles in high winds such as lawn furniture, potted plants and trashcans.

5. Protect Windows and Glass Doors. If you do not have impact resistant windows, install shutters or plywood to cover the glass. Brace double entry and garage doors at the top and at the bottom.

You might have heard the term “Invest” used lately

With all the buzz of the finally active Atlantic hurricane season, you might have heard the term “Invest” being used.

Here is the definition as defined by the National Hurricane Center:

Invest:

A weather system for which a tropical cyclone forecast center (NHC, CPHC, or JTWC) is interested in collecting specialized data sets (e.g., microwave imagery) and/or running model guidance. Once a system has been designated as an invest, data collection and processing is initiated on a number of government and academic web sites, including the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and the University of Wisconsin Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (UW-CIMSS). The designation of a system as an invest does not correspond to any particular likelihood of development of the system into a tropical cyclone; operational products such as the Tropical Weather Outlook or the JTWC/TCFA should be consulted for this purpose.

Publix takes Hurricane Protection for Tampa Bay Seriously!

At a recent shopping trip to my local Tampa Bay Publix, I was surprised and happy to see a sign advocating that I visit www.publix.com/storm. I am pleased to announce that this is yet another great site with excellent information for residents of Florida and other areas that might be targets for hurricane activity.

The Publix site includes a link to developing an emergency plan with their partner, OneStorm, as well as downloadable checklists for emergency supplies and non-perishable foods. In addition, there is a free downloadable guide that Publix is also giving away at their stores. If you cannot find one at your local Publix, make sure to ask a Customer Service agent for help!

I applaud Publix for taking this step and spending their marketing money on a worthy cause. Hurricane Safety is extremely important and it is great to see Publix taking a lead here. Thanks Publix!
